Concentration: what is the accuracy to evaluate the concentration with a photometer?

22.03.2023

Measuring the concentration of a substance is an essential task in various fields, such as chemistry, biology, and medicine. One of the most commonly used methods to measure concentration is by using a photometer. A photometer measures the amount of light absorbed by a sample, which can be translated into a concentration value. However, how accurate is this method, and what factors influence its precision? In this article, we will explore the accuracy of photometers in measuring concentration.

The accuracy of a photometer in measuring concentration depends on several factors, such as the quality of the photometer, and the algorithm used to convert absorbance values into concentration values. To ensure the accuracy of our photometer, our R&D team developed an algorithm that has been tested and validated. We compared the concentration values obtained with our AccuCell photometer to those obtained with other devices and found a correlation of 0.96, indicating a high level of accuracy.

It is also worth noting that the accuracy of photometers in measuring concentration can vary depending on the type of semen being measured. Some semen may have a stronger absorbance capacity than others, which can affect the accuracy of the measurements.

IMV Technologies has therefore developed different algorithms depending on the animal species to respond to this variability reliant on the type of semen analyzed, therefore it is crucial to calibrate the photometer regularly and use the appropriate algorithm for each substance to obtain accurate concentration values.

In conclusion, photometers are an accurate and reliable method for measuring concentration. The accuracy of the measurements depends on several factors, such as the quality of the photometer and the algorithm used to convert absorbance values into concentration values. By ensuring these factors are properly addressed, photometers can provide accurate and precise measurements of concentration, making them a valuable tool for various applications.
